It was constructed with funding from the US government agencies with its mission to prove that the US was committed to the proposition of using atomic power for peace. It was part of President Eisenhower’s larger “Atoms For Peace” project. It was built in the late 1950s at a cost of 46.9 million with the nuclear reactor and core costing 28.3 million. It was designed by George C. In New York City. Her keel was laid down by the NY Shipbuilding Corporation at Camden, NJ. The nuclear reactor was manufactured by Babcock & Wilcox. I believe today it is housed somewhere in the Baltimore Harbor and I do think it is available for public viewing once or twice a year. The NS Savannah was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 1982 and named a National Historic Landmark in 1991. The painting itself is unsigned but I do believe it was painted sometime in the 1960s and it has a great midcentury modern frame and a sticker from a well-known paint store in Lynchburg, VA.
