Dollar Line PRESIDENT CLEVELAND Deck Plan Marked Up As Troopship Sunk in 1942
American President Lines – A large (21″ by 48″) deck plan for the PRESIDENT COOLIDGE with historical significance. First, the plan does not include the COOLIDGE’s ill-fated sister PRESIDENT HOOVER which was wrecked in 1938. Also, the company is shown as American President Lines, newly formed when the feds shut down Dollar Line in 1937. But of most significance is that plan is marked up with troopship notations. First, the plan basics. Six decks are shown in details. Black and white photos include a portrait-at-sea and interior views of Promenade Deck, Smoking Room, Continental Lounge, living room of the “Suite Moderne”, a large cabin, a buffet table in the Dining Room, Deauville Pool, and the Marine Tea Garden. Of historical significance are the markings on the three upper decks; Sun, Boat, and Promenade. In neat black marker the areas have been outlined and allocated to seven different officers who were probably in charge of military units sailing off to war in the Pacific. Also shown are the former First Class cabins assigned to the officers. I imagine their men met for training and socializing in the assigned spaces. Donnell had the entire Sun Deck, a great spot as long as the weather cooperated. Miller commandeered the Smoking Room, while Capt. Schultz was assigned the Marine Tea Garden with its attached Soda Fountain. And what of lowly Lt. Campbell who was given the Boat Deck corridor and the Swimming Pool? There is no indication of which voyage these assignments are from. It probably was not the COOLIDGE’s seventh voyage in October 1942. While steaming into the Allied-held harbor at Espiritu Santo, novice sailors couldn’t read a frantic message blinked by the harbor master. More than 5,000 men scrambled down rope ladders into the water and saved themselves. Only the captain and four others were lost. Today the PRESIDENT COOLIDGE is a popular dive spot in the Pacific.
