The CSS Virginia is a resin cast model warship. She carried ten guns, a seven-inch pivot-mounted rifle at each end and a battery of two six-inch rifles and six nine-inch smooth bores. In a historic action that dramatically demonstrated her superiority, Virginia rammed and sank the big U. Navy sloop of war Cumberland and shelled the frigate Congress into submission. A second historic battle ensued, with the two opponents firing away, without mortal effect. The action ended in a tactical draw in the early afternoon of 9 March 1862. As the Confederates abandoned their positions in the Norfolk area, Virginia was threatened with the loss of her base. CSS Virginia’s wreck was largely removed between 1866 and 1876. The carefully-reproduced CSS Virginia (the former frigate USS Merrimack) of the Confederate States Navy shows the detail in the conception, design, and implementation in what was a huge leap forward in the technology of marine warfare, and represent a crucial turning point, coming midway between the major sea battles of Trafalgar and Jutland fought against the ironclad CSS Virginia (the former frigate USS Merrimack) of the Confederate States Navy. Fully assembled and ready for display. The hull is constructed with a heavy resin. On top is a replica of the. Iron-plated deck with two lifeboats. On deck are eight metal cannons on sides and one each on bow and stern. Also on deck are smoke and air intake stacks, and hull rails. A single metal propeller is on the bottom. Model rests on a black wood base with a metal nameplate. Dimensions: Measures 24″ long from bow to stern x 5″ tall without stand x 4.5 wide.
