It is THE ONLY silver beribboned and engraved cage which held the bottle of Champagne used to christen the U. SEAWOLF, the second nuclear powered submarine launched on July 21, 1955. The cage bears 16 lines of 6 star-shaped cut-outs, on each one line, to allow the Champagne of the broken bottle within to splash out. A cascade of strands of red, white and blue ribbons (four of each color) are affixed at top. Three screws (one is missing) fix the removable bottom of this cage, to allow to insert the Champagne bottle, then to remove the broken remains. This item is engravedat top: U. Of course, this cage shows dents from where it struck the hull of the vessel. This cage is presented in in a fitted wood presentation case, with a sliding lid adorning a metal descriptive plaque. The USS SEAWOLF 5SSN-575 had a very distinguished career, following the USS NAUTILUS, as America’s second nuclear submarine, and was the only U. Submarine built with a liquid metal cooled (sodium) nuclear reactor. A long and accurate file is supplied, describing all the life of the USS SEAWOLF.
