Rare 1916 Cased Presentation Print – German U-Boat Deutschland – Baltimore Visit. Topdog Presents: Always interesting stuff! For your consideration is a rare and likely unique piece of World War I naval history : a large-format Commemorative Presentation Print documenting the 1916 voyage of the German merchant submarine Deutschland. While this powerful illustration by artist Hugo J. Thiede is occasionally seen on period postcards, this presentation print is a significantly more refined and valuable production, featuring rich, saturated colors and crisp detail. Historical Significance: This artwork commemorates one of the most remarkable technical achievements of the Great War. The Deutschland, under the command of Captain Paul König (seen in the central portrait), was the world’s first submarine designed specifically as a cargo carrier. The Artwork & Allegory. Central Portrait: Captain Paul König, with inscriptions marking the historic dates: “Abfahrt von Bremen, 24 Juni” and “Ankunft in Baltimore, 9 Juli”. The Submarine: A highly detailed rendering of the Deutschland at sea, bearing the inscription “DEUTSCHLAND BREMEN” on the conning tower. The Allegories: Thiede has created a powerful allegory of the voyage. On the left, Columbia (the USA) reaches out a welcoming hand with a laurel wreath of peace, backed by an American Bald Eagle. On the right, Germania stands on guard with a sword and a shield bearing the Iron Cross, protected by a German Imperial Eagle, signifying strength and determination. Condition: The print itself is in very good antique condition, with colors remaining strong and distinct (see photos). It is housed in what appears to be its original period wood frame, which has a beautiful natural patina but does exhibit small chips and typical age-related wear as shown in the detailed photos.
