1864 CIVIL War Flag Relic From The Ironclad Ram Csn Tennessee
VERY Rare and important, original Civil War Relic being a piece of the Confederate National Flag from the Confederate States Navy Ironclad Ram CSS Tennessee which was captured while single handedly attacking the Fleet of Admiral David Farragut in the final action of the Battle of Mobile Bay. The CSS staged a heroic final assault ordered by its Commander Admiral Franklin Buchanan rather than retreating after all of the other Confederate Ships had been sunk. Offered here is a 3 1/4″ by 1 3/4″ piece of red muslin type cloth with an affixed, period note that reads Piece of the Flag of the Rebel Ram Tennessee captured by Admiral Farragut’s Fleet in Mobile Bay Friday August 5th, 1864 / From, W. This amazing Confederate Flag Relic was mounted a VERY long time ago with a number of Confederate States and Southern Bank Notes on what appears to be an album page of some kind. The end of one of the Notes is detached and turned over to reveal another notation (in the same hand as the note on the Flag Relic) that reads From Lieutenant A. / Captured on Board the Rebel Ram Tennessee Friday August 5th, 1864. Although we cannot say for sure but our best guess is that all of the Bank Notes mounted with the Flag Relic were taken from members of the crew of the CSS Tennessee when it was captured at the Battle of Mobile Bay. The CSS Tennessee was a casemate ironclad ram built for the Confederate Navy during the American Civil War. She served as the flagship of Admiral Franklin Buchanan, commander of the Mobile Squadron, after her commissioning. She was captured in 1864 by the Union Navy during the Battle of Mobile Bay and then participated in the Union’s subsequent Siege of Fort Morgan. The CSS Tennessee became flagship of Admiral Buchanan, and served gallantly in action in the Battle of Mobile Bay on August 5, 1864. On that morning Tennessee and wooden gunboats CSS Gaines, CSS Morgan, and CSS Selma, steamed into combat against Admiral David G. Farragut’s powerful fleet of four ironclad monitors and 14 wooden steamers. Unable to ram the Union ships because of their superior speed, Tennessee delivered a vigorous fire on the Federals at close range. The Confederate gunboats were sunk or dispersed. Farragut’s fleet steamed up into the bay and anchored. Buchanan might have held Tennessee under the fort’s protection but steamed after the Federal fleet and engaged despite overwhelming odds. The ram became the target for the entire Union fleet. Tennessee was rammed by several ships, and her vulnerable steering chains (which, oddly, lay in exposed trenches on the after deck) were carried away by the heavy gunfire. Unable to maneuver, Tennessee was battered repeatedly by heavy solid shot from her adversaries. With two of her men killed, Admiral Buchanan and eight others wounded, and increasingly severe damage being inflicted on her, Tennessee was forced to surrender. The Relic Piece of the Confederate National Flag offered here are unconditionally guaranteed original and of the period. It and the Bank Note described above are further guaranteed to be as described and taken from the Ironclad Ram CSS Tennessee when it was captured during the Battle of Mobile Bay. As stated above, the Flag Relic and the Bank Notes were mounted a VERY long time ago (likely shortly after they were acquired) onto what appears to be a page from an album or scrapbook. The Flag Relic is well preserved with a stain at the center of the hand written note likely from the original adhesive used to attach the note to the cloth. The Bank Notes are variously worn and damaged as can be seen in the scans below and the one with the end detached is brittle. The Piece of this Civil War Confederate National Flag from the CSS Tennessee is an amazing piece of History and for those who cannot afford the 6 figure price tag of a full Civil War period Confederate National Flag, this is an opportunity to own a simply amazing relic of a Flag that flew aboard the CSS Tennessee during the Battle of Mobile Bay! This fantastic Civil War Artifact and the accompanying Bank Notes are offered here, as always, with no reserve and with the confidence that it will attract the serious attention that it justly deserves!!
