The USS Yorktown (CV-10) nicknamed The Fighting Lady was commissioned in April 1943 the second carrier of the Essex-Class of aircraft carriers, was originally named USS Bonhomme Richard but was renamed Yorktown in honor of the Yorktown (CV-5) that was lost at the Battle of Midway in 1942. The Yorktown (CV-10) received 12 Battle Stars and the Presidential Unit Citation during World War II and 5 Battle Stars for the Vietnam War. Rear Admiral Condit entered the military in May 1937 and was a pilot attached to the Torpedo Squadron Five (VT-5) on both the USS Yorktown (CV-5) and the USS Yorktown (CV-10) in World War II. Lieutenant Condit was captured when his plane was shot down in August 1943 and spent 2 years as a Prisoner of War in Tokyo. He was selected to represent the Navy POWs aboard the USS Missouri for the formal surrender ceremony. He stayed in the Navy after the war and served 22 years before retiring in June 1959, among his awards he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Medal, 2 Purple Hearts and POW Medal. He passed away June 30, 2003 at the age of 88. USS Yorktown is a 1:350 Scale Desk Top Display Model Hand Crafted from Solid Mahogany Wood.
