Vintage 1913 Photo USS Brig Niagara War Of 1812 Ship Commodore Perry Toledo, OH
This original photo was found at an old estate near Toledo, Ohio. It is of the USS Brig Niagara in the Maumee River escorted by The Wolverine which was a converted Union gunboat that guarded Johnson’s Island Confederate POW camp during the Civil War. In 1913 The Niagara was towed to several ports on the Great Lakes for the centennial celebration of the Battle of Lake Erie. The type of frame the photo is in, along with the style of the photo, helps to date it from that period. I’ve compared this photo to contemporary photos of The Niagara and it’s a match. Also other photos of The Niagara and Wolverine in the Maumee River appear in Gregory M. Miller’s book Historic Photos of Toledo. On the back is an old masking tape notation stating at one time the photo came from an old house with a Toledo address. The image, not including the matte, is 6 1/2 X 4 1/2 inches. The frame measures 9 X 7 inches. This is a wonderful unpublished photo of Commodore Parry’s famous US warship. Please view the photo as it is part of the description. Low starting price with no reserve. Good luck and please see my other listings.
