Rare Vintage c. 1963 USMC LVH X-1 Assault HYDROFOIL Display Model by TOPPING
RARE Original Vintage c. Rare Lycoming – AVCO experimental prototype (truck – hydrofoil combination). Due to the estimated construction expense, the US Marine Corps never ordered these special landing vehicles, so they were never put into production —-only 2 experimental prototypes were ever built. This solid metal model weighs 8.5 lbs. And measures 14.5 long. The base measures 22″ x 8″. The total weight of the model and the base (with the metal mounts) is 12lbs. Both the front hyrdrofoil assembly and the rear stabilizer/prop assembly fold-in and retract back onto the top of the truck. The main propeller assembly retracts into a separate compartment underneath the truck. The gas turbine pack sits atop the vehicle, directly behind the crew cab. The sides of the center cargo bay fold out. The front and rear tires/axles can be raised and then retract back into the wheel wells. Still in Very Good Used Condition considering that this model is nearly 60 YEARS OLD. All the movable assemblies are complete. Normal surface wear, some paint flaking, and some scratches to paint. The retraction of the wheels is intermittent in that little internal pins/levers that control the action mechanism frequently get stuck and the wheels have to be forced up/down manually. It seems the model builders at Topping had to source the rubber tires from what was readily available at the time, the tires are marked’Structo Toys’. The model, including the rectangular gas turbine pack behind the crew cab, is solid metal; the crew cab and windows look to be made of plastic or resin. See detailed photos for condition assessment.
