Deciphered information from remnants of the label on verso approximately reads : THE ORIGINAL USS MICHIGAN Later Known as the USS Wolverine As she appeared when in service on the Great Lakes she was the first iron vessel built by the United States Navy, and the fifth steam propelled vessel… She was fabricated and launched in Erie PA. In 1844, where she now lies, scarcely a semblance of her former self, condemned and ready to be broken by mandate, 83 years from her launching, she will pass on… Unless preserved and placed in her former condition… , matching the date on the image. Image type in this case difficult to discern under glass – Albumen photo less so, Woodburytype or Stannotype suspected. In 1949 Captain Frederick Oliver USN (retired) wrote :… 1923 when, while on a cruise, a tired connecting rod let go and the piston knocked the cylinder head out.
