British Royal Navy Cordite Charge Carrier (Clarkson Case)
This has been a family piece passed down for more than 80 years now, but it’s time to sell to someone that will appreciate the history and condition of this piece. British Royal Navy Marked No. 56 VI Leather, Cork. Canvas Cordite Charge Carrier. An original leather Royal Navy cordite charge carrier constructed of Leather, cork and canvas. These carriers were used by the Royal Navy prior to, during and after WW1 to carry the cordite charges for Naval guns. Explosive charges were placed into these containers before they left the magazines. The Clarkson’s Cases then rode up the hoists to the guns where the charges were removed only when it was time to load them into the breech. The front is ink stamped with an armorial showing the British Royal Coat of Arms with the phrase “DIEU ET MON DROIT” on a banner below the armorial and the phrase “HONI SOIT MAL Y PENSE” on a garter surrounding the coat of arms. It measures 28″ high with a 7″ diameter. The bottom is impressed’No. 56 VI’ and’BH&G Ltd. Which stands for Barrow, Hepburn & Gale, a company that still exists and retains royal warrants for the creation and repair of dispatch boxes.
