U. S. Miniature Ship Models Ww11 So Salem Studios Lead Ships New Mexico 6 1/4
An unusual find–ID model, scale , used by the U. This model is ——NEW MEXICO. These are sometimes referred to as “lead ships” as they were cast out of a lead/antimony alloy which makes them heavy like lead, but much harder than lead. The hulls and superstructures were generally cast as a unit, but fixtures such as gun turrets, cranes and catapults were cast separately with shafts to be inserted into holes drilled in the hull. This allows for these items to be swiveled to port or starboard as desired. Detail is quite accurate given the scale. Screw hole underneath mounted indicate it is originally mounted on a plywood strip that fit into a larger boxed set. These sets were made during WW ll. Condition is quite good, given its age, all parts are present. The item “U. S. MINIATURE SHIP MODELS WW11 SO SALEM STUDIOS LEAD SHIPS NEW MEXICO 6 1/4″ is in sale since Wednesday, July 25, 2018.
