Professionally Framed U. S. A. T. ST. MIHIEL Photo in Panama Canal Miraflores Locks
United States Army Transport Service – An excellent photo of the U. MIHIEL passing through the Miraflores Locks in the Panama Canal with Fort Clayton in the background. I believe the photo is from the 1920s-30s. The photo is of exceptional clarity, revealing all sorts of interesting details. Sailors and nursing staff are enjoying the scenery from the foredeck, the captain is resting his elbows on the bridge wing, and many of the portholes have air scoops to relieve the tropical heat. Two smaller merchant vessels are departing the lock on the other side. MIHIEL was laid up in 1947 and scrapped in Baltimore in 1957. The mahogany frame looks original to the photo and measures 13″ by 22″.
