Company C, 56th Infantry, American Expeditionary Forces, embarked from New York for Brest, France, on USS Leviathan in early August 1918. Postcard dated Aug 20 1918 received 6-line machine postmark (Die 1) RECD FROM ARMY – BORDEAUX SEP 3 1918 after TWO manuscript censorships and partial purple ink AEF A. 1949 censor mark applied. IS THIS A UNIQUE SURVIVING POST CARD FROM 1918? Built for Hamburg-America Line as VADERLAND – 54,282 tons, top speed 26 knots. In trans-Atlantic service from 14 May 1914 to July 1914, before seeking refuge in New York harbor. Carried up to 14,000 Soldiers, Marines and Medical Staff on each of her 9 pre-Armistice crossings from New York to France, and over 100,000 personnel on 9 crossings after Armistice. Leviathan – in trans-Atlantic service June 1923 to 1933/1934 – scrapped in Scotland June 1938.
