The outer case is leather with gilt trim and the inside is satin lined with a deep black velvet carriage. Push button closure with metal hinges. These Dreadnought spoons Hallmarks on the spoons indicate. The dedication of becoming a flagship of the 4th Battle Squadron. Made area: Birmingham England. Type metal: Sterling Silver. At the outbreak of World War I in 1914, she was flagship of the 4th Battle Squadron in the North Sea, based at Scapa Flow. She was relieved as flagship on 10 December by HMS Benbow. The British Royal Navy 4th Battle Squadron was a squadron consisting of battleships. The 4th Battle Squadron was initially part of the Royal Navy’s Home Fleet. During World War I the Home Fleet was renamed the Grand Fleet. The squadron changed composition often as ships were damaged, retired or transferred.
