[NEW ZEALAND WARS] Photograph taken on board HMS Eclipse at Port Royal, Jamaica, circa 1866. Albumen print photograph in arched format, 175 x 235 mm, unmounted; no photographer’s imprint. With contemporary inscription in pencil “Port Royal”; evidently removed at some point from a nineteenth century window mount, and accompanied by a later typed caption label Company on board H. The gun vessel HMS. Was launched in 1860 and was immediately despatched to join the Australia Station. In 1863-64 she and her crew played an important role in the Second Taranaki War in New Zealand. Left the Australia Station in May 1866. The present photograph, showing the entire crew on board at Port Royal, Kingston, was presumably taken during her return voyage to England that year, as the vessel was scrapped in 1867.
