Here’s some information about the Steichen group. During both WW 1 and WW II many American civilians set aside their successful professional careers to support the war efforts. Photographer Edward Steichens contributions reached far beyond his immediate area of expertise when he got involved late in his career – to join the Navy. But first he started with the Army during WW 1. By the time Steichen was given command of the Naval Aviation Photographic Unit in 1941, he was 62 years old and was one who had accumulated a lifetime of achievements and accolades in the private sector professionally in the late 1890’s and early 1900’s and later as the commanding officer of the Armys photographic division of the American Expeditionary Forces in WWI. Beginning in 1917, he would serve 16 months in that post and be awarded the rank of lieutenant colonel with a citation by Gen. Pershing and was appointed a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor. As it came to be, it was just the beginning of Steichens Boys’ impact on the very future of America. The Steichen group of assembled photographer’s photographic record of Naval Aviations combat heroism would become one of the most powerful American weapons the Japanese war machine would have to face during the course of WWII.
