1940 Photo Album, USS Yorktown, US Navy, William Shulver, Menus, Matchbooks More
This is a second listing of this album, meant only to show you additional photos. This one has an outrageous price! 1940 Photo album and scrapbook of US Navy sailor (machinist mate) William Shulver of 196 Hedley Ave. Central Falls, Rhode Island–his service time aboard USS Yorktown, aircraft carrier sunk at the Battle of Midway. Shulver was off of her before Midway, transferring to the USS Pocomoke for the rest of the war in May of 1942. I’ll list his military estate in two batches: this listing concerns the Yorktown service. A second listing will be his Pocomoke service. Just too much to document in one listing. Shulver’s parents were Mr. Louis Shulver, residing at the above address. He had a brother, Herbert, who joined the Army, and at least three sisters: Ruth H. And one I don’t know the name of, but that should be available in the 1940 census. A listing of album’s contents: most photos are mounted with photo corners (not glued in). If an item is loose, I’ll denote that. And if it’s glued in (also called “Tipped In” if just glued along one edge), I’ll denote that. 151 Photos and postcards in all, plus the USS Yorktown cards, newspapers, etc. 9×12 original crayon of Shulver in uniform, signed, but I can’t make out the signature. He was a handsome fellow. 1940 “General Orders for Sentinels on Post” from US Naval Training Station Newport, RI (loose). Leather cover album, 13×8.5, USS Yorktown. The back of this album page has two newspaper clippings: “Yorktown’s Log New Epoch in War History” and “New Yorktown Hits the Sea”, with a photo and story of new Yorktown launching in 1943. Two loose newspaper clippings with photos: Yorktown listing before sinking, and Casualties from Yorktown disembark. On loose album page: USS Yorktown “Plan of the day for Saturday, May 3, 1941″ and an unused Navy postcard, where you’d cross out any message you didn’t want to send. Two page article with photos of the Midway Battle. I think this was in an issue of Life Magazine. USS Yorktown Matchbook, “Scouting Squadron Five”–remains of scrapbook paper on back (loose).
