Great White Fleet San Francisco 1908 Signed Book Napkin Program Map Invitation
Great White Fleet San Francisco 1908 Signed Book Napkin Program Map Invitation. Incredible grouping for any collector of Great White Fleet memorabilia, or collectors of San Jose or San Francisco history. With the American Fleet from the Atlantic to the Pacific. Is the well-known book covering the North and South American leg of Teddy Roosevelt’s “Great White Fleet” voyage. This souvenir leather-bound copy and the additional materials are from the visit of the USS Vermont to San Francisco in July 1908 as part of the fleet. From San Francisco, the fleet departed to Asia, Australia and more. Mildred Overfelt, original owner of the book, was the daughter of Mary Pyle Overfelt. Mary was one of the members of the Pyle-Whiteman party that immigrated to California in 1846. The Pyles and Overfelts were well-known members of the early San Jose community, where Overfelt Park still bears their name. Leather (or leather-look) souvenir edition of Robert D. Inscribed from Herbert S. Houghton to Mildred L. Overfelt onboard the USS Vermont in San Francisco, July 4, 1908. Book has leather or faux-leather boards. Cloth tape repair to front and back hinges seems to be older. Frontispiece foldout map in nice shape. Good clean text and images with only faint tanning at edges. Rubs to edges, scrape on back. Hand-painted napkin with flag and eagle. Signed by Willis Fehr, M. Houghton and George? Mildred Overfelt’s mother was a Pyle, so this last gentleman is likely a relative. I could not find anything on Fehr or Houghton, nor determine for sure which Overfelt is M. It may have been Mildred’s mother, Mary. Napkin has creases, as shown. Invitation to the USS Vermont for an “entertainment”, July 4 1908. Invitation has misc spotting, center creases. Card in nice shape, tanned on front, mild marks on back. One reception program clean, the other considerably tanned and with small pencil notes. Official program for the Atlantic fleet at Monterey, which was May 1-4, 1908. Shows tanning and center crease, small corner creases. See description area for condition of each item. More than 12 photos, please scroll below description to see photos 13 and higher.
