Launched in 1839, the Nemesis was deployed to China where she served during the First Opium War under Captains William Hutcheon Hall and Richard Collinson. Armed with two pivot-mounted 32-pounder and four 6-pounder guns, her shallow draught and watertight bulkheads made her a formidable foe. In later years, Nemesis toured Indonesia and the Philippines where she worked to suppress pirates.
