For your consideration is this super rare puzzle of the U. S Cruiser New York published by McLoughlin Brothers Publishing in 1892. This 128 year old picture puzzle is so rare I cant find reference to any other examples remaining. This possibly could be the last one! The puzzle is complete and original and in superb condition with all 40 chromolithograph picture pieces made of a hard pressboard material. This beautiful and highly detailed scarce puzzle of the U. Cruiser NEW YORK measures 22 x 10.5 inches when assembled. Was launched on December 2, 1891 and was the first armored cruiser to enter Navy service. She was 186 feet long and had a fast cruising speed of 20 knots powered by four triple-expansion engines putting out a combined 16,000 horsepower. This beautiful and scarce puzzle depicts her at full speed with all her armament and glory on display. Rejoining the North Atlantic Squadron, she served as the flagship of the squadron and led the warships against the Spanish Navy in the Battle of Santiago on July 3, 1898, during the Spanish-American War. Was assigned off Latin America, in Asiatic waters, in the eastern Pacific, in the Atlantic, and off Europe. In February 1911, she was renamed. And was subsequently renamed. World War I, Rochester. The box of the puzzle displays the same image of the puzzle when complete and the box measures approximately 12.75 x 9.5 x 1.75 inches. The box shows wear commensurate with prior light soiling to the top and still displays wonderfully. The bottom box sides are paper covered wood and the box top and bottom of the box are thick cardboard. On the bottom left corner of the box top it reads copyrighted 1892 and the bottom right reads McLoughlin Bros New York.
