Amazing Circa 1940 Folk Art Battleship Model Hand Crafted Wood 3 1/2 Feet Long
FANTASTIC HAND CRAFTED FOLK ART BATTLESHIP MODEL CIRCA 1940. I was told by the gentleman I bought this model from that it was made by U. It has been suggested that the model resembles Pre-Dreadnought type battleships that date from the late 19th century to early 20th century. The model measures about 42 inches long X 7 inches wide X 17 inches high (including the mast). It is hand crafted and made of wood with some metal parts to include the port holes and some accent pieces such as cranes, small gun mounts, etc. The original grayish/green paint has a great oxidized look showing some age crackle throughout. The 3 main gun turrets rotate and some of the smaller deck guns move up & down. The rudder moves by turning a small gear located on the bow. There are many accessories to this model such as searchlights, ladders, stack of ammunition, different types of life boats, life rafts and a fantastic seaplane with a launch that swivels. The model is wired to light up the portholes from the inside. The wiring is old and brittle and the plug is missing so it would need to be rewired. I have not removed the deck to see the light fixture inside (it could be missing) but it looks to unscrew and break away in two parts. The wooden stand was custom made for this model and looks to post date when it was made in 1940. There are some condition issues to note such as 2 of the metal life boat cranes have broken away from their mounts and need to be re cemented, the top of the center mast has come unglued, some of the wire rigging is missing and some needs to be restrung (one of the lifeboats and the seaplane are tied down with very old string, these would have been held in place with wire). There are a few small missing parts – one of the tie down cleats at the bow, one of the smaller deck guns at the bow, one of the 3 life boat cranes (the mount is still there) and one of the 3 small guns on the platform tower. These missing parts can be reproduced by hand or 3D printer? I have chosen not to do any restoration work on the model. It would display great just as it is or it can be rewired and with some restoration work be brought to another level, I will leave that to the new owner to decide. Overall an outstanding and very impressive folk art made model and a perfect centerpiece for a nautical or military themed living room, library or bar/restaurant!
