Also included are papers and ephemera related to the life of William F. Their work brought these men through waterways stretching across Illinois, Ohio, & Indiana. Towns like New Harmony, St. Francisville, Darwin, Terra Haute and Meroni are mentioned. We see glimpses of scenery including islands and bridges, coastlines and valleys. The men’s endeavors take place in both fine weather as well as when rivers are swollen or frozen over with crushing ice. We see quarter boats and sternwheelers and steamboats… Many of the boats/ships have legible writing on their hulls or sides. Best featured are the quarter boats of the Ohio (& Wabash) River Survey (of Louisville Kentucky) but there are many others including the US Wave Rock, the Rosa R. / the Island Queen of Evansville, Ind. / the Glenville / the Vera R. / Winner / Clarence Thorn / Greater New York – Grand Floating Palace / and the Sprague (somewhat washed out image). We see men inside their rooms on the quarterboats. We see them in the field with their levels and surveying equipment. We see them dynamiting ice and dredging. We see them skinny-dipping and playing some light baseball. We see the men dressed in bathing suits that spell out the words “OHIO RIVER SURVEY 1913″ and in certain photos all the men are posed upon the decks of the survey boats with each man carefully named. Amongst the ephemera you will find a few additional items specifically related to the two surveys – as well as photographs and ephemera that will help you understand the life of William F. Meidroth from infancy to death. There are additional photos inside the album not shown that I left out for brevity hah!
