Antique 1861 Steamship Knoxville SET 8 HUGE LITHOS Mechanical Drawings PRINTS. RARE Set of Eight Mid-19th Century Large Scale Engineering Lithographs!! The Following Extract from “American Engineering” “The “Knoxville, for which the engine exhibited in the accompanying engraving was constructed, is a very superior vessel of great speed. She has made the run between New York and Savannah in fifty-four hours, which is the shortest time recorded, and this, together with the regularity of her trips, proves her to be a steamship of no ordinary qualities. The eight subject lithograph prints sourced from: “American Engineering”, a portfolio of what publisher Gustavus Weissenborn called “large and detailed engravings embracing various branches of mechanical art, ” including marine, locomotive and steam engines such as the ones offered here, as well as manufacturing machinery and structures such as iron buildings and bridges. The engravings were issued as folio prints, apparently to subscribers, and an accompanying text was published in 1861. Weissenborn was a professional civil engineer with offices in NYC, and many of his own drawings were employed in the design of this portfolio, which includes all forms of mid-19th. Century mechanical equipment: steam engines, locomotives, fire engines, screw propellers, lathes, iron bridges, printing presses, etc.. Hitchcock (American Architecture Books), 1363, notes that “parts of the Atlas began to be issued separately some years before the work as a whole was published”, perhaps explaining the extreme scarcity of the work. The renowned Hagley Museum and Library of American Business and Technology (Wilmington, DE) can only claim a partial set of these most important plates as part of their collection. They can be easily removed for framing, as they float free within this protective environment; Centerfolds as issued; Plates w/ some faint occasional foxing; A few threadholes along centerfolds w/ a few slightly pulled; A Few Instances of Reinforcement on Versos; One Plate w/ Two Very Small Edge Chips; Overall the plates are in very good to excellent condition!
