PLEASE VIEW ALL PICTURES BELOW. Incredible folk art carved wood serving tray with handles and glass cover to protect the carving. It is signed with the initials B. And dated 1951 in the lower right corner. A strong composition and wonderful collection of images. The handles are carved from a darker wood and have stippled carving similar to the background of the tray. There are more stars carved around the sides of the tray. It has scalloped aprons on all sides and corner feet. The tray measures about 12 1/2″ by 18 1/2″ not counting the handles. This is a museum quality piece of maritime folk art in my opinion. In 1949, the Military Sea Transportation Service became the single managing agency for the Department of Defense’s ocean transportation needs. The command assumed responsibility for providing sealift and ocean transportation for all military services as well as for other government agencies. In 1950, the year before this tray was carved, 72 seagoing transports of the US Army Transportation Corps (including the USS Patch) were transferred to the Military Sea Transportation Service. 42 of the ships that operate in the Atlantic were handed over to the Navy in a ceremony on the transport General Alexander M. Patch at the Brooklyn Army Base, while the remaining 30 that operate in the Pacific were transferred in ceremonies at San Francisco and Seattle. It may have continued in service all the way up through the Vietnam War.
