This class of ships was built for the British Royal Navy before WWII and was comprised of four ships: Iron Duke, Marlborough, Benbow, and Emperor of India. The artist has signed this painting in the lower left hand corner Wm. Gerlach Barklow Co was an art calendar and postcard factory. This original painting must have been used to make prints for a calendar. You can actually just faintly see where a caption was written along the bottom edge of this painting, but this caption has since been removed by a past owner. They also placed a varnished surface over the painting, which has caused the streaking you see over the artist’s signature. The painting itself measures 15″ by 20″ and it comes in high quality 19 ½” by 24 ½” painted frame.
