Signed by the Artist W. 17″x 23-3/4″x 1-1/2 Unframed. Liberty ships were nicknamed. “Ugly ducklings” by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Named after Fred C. Jonathan Sturges when it was torpedoed in the North Atlantic 1942. Built in 1945, Official Number 247059, St. John’s River Shipbuilding Co. Before we left’Norfolk-, two old liberty ships USS George Steers and USS Fred C. Stebbins were towed to Viequez island near Roosevelt Roads. It was quite an unusual sight. In all, the Jacksonville yard produced 82 of the countrys 2,700 Liberty Ships. Only the Brown and the Jeremiah OBrien survive as intact ships; however, three other hulls are still afloat, and among them is the S. Huddell, built in Jacksonville. Liberty Ships were traditionally named for individuals who were no longer living and who had made a significant contribution to American life. Some of the later ships were named for merchant seamen who died during the war. The names of Jacksonville Liberty Ships reveal both area and national history and sentiment of the time.
