While exact production logs for sextants are rare, Buff & Buff serial numbers reached 12,759 later in their history (early 20th century). A number in the 11,000s is consistent with a 1918 (late WWI) production date.

Sextant, WWII Ball Recording 1944. This piece was made in 1944 by the Mergenthaler Linotype Corp out of Brooklyn, NY. The serial #6183 matches the one on the box, the celebration document and on the instrument. It is very rare to have the serial numbers match. The box also contains a transfer letter from the USS Chandeleur AV 10 to the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard dated 15 May 1947. This original piece is complete and in excellent condition. The German Navy Sextant was used by crew members for long range map calculations. It provided accurate reading, using sidereal (star) navigation. Made of brass, aluminum, and steel. This is a VERY GOOD German Sextant in all original condition, COMPLETE with it’s original box! Not the common C. Plath variation, this was manufactured by Georg Hechelmann, Hamburg.. He inside lid features the original label/card, and clearly indicates the manufacture, as well as the date of production being, July 1939. Markings indicate it is. The sextant itself features some very minor marks and scratches, but nothing that takes away from the overall appearance. 11.5 in length, and retains MOST of the components and accessories. Optics are clear, HOWEVER, it appears someone was in the process of repairing or restoring this. As such, there are some broken and missing parts. All colored filters and mirrors are also present. Brought back by a US veteran, it would make a FANTASTIC addition to any collection, or display! TERMS OF SALE. Most of my items are vintage, and as such are AS-IS, so you must therefore expect a degree of wear due to age and/or usage. ABOUT ME. The kit looks complete and in great condition. Included with the unit is the oak storage box, lenses, mounts, and mounting pieces, as well as the adjusting tools. All of this appears to be in good condition. The box is in great condition along with the hinges & locking latches, all working fine. The Oak case Measures 9-1/4″ Wide x 9″ Deep and 5-1/2 Tall. Please see all of the pictures, they are the best description of the iem. Can you just imagine the story of this piece. The things it saw and the Battles or Actions it was in during WW2 and the Korean War. My Dad might have seen this piece when he was transported during the service! I remember as a kid being dragged into my great uncle George Gooseman’s clock museum in Colorado Springs under the watchful eye of the grand Pike’s Peak Mountain. His building was just off 24 Highway in an out of place blue and white striped metal building. It was close to the flourishing, but now gone, Van Briggle’s pottery shop and the “Ghost town” tourist spot. Upon entering the doors, the strange blending aroma of older wood and mechanical parts greeted the nostrils in the same manner as the methodical ticking greeted the ears. As one would walk down the hallway to the main open room, the heartbeat of the building grew more intense. Upon turning the last corner of the walkway to finally meet the source of the sound, the sight was incredible with motion and movement as hundreds of clocks were still telling their story of an era quickly passing in time…. It was that love of the creativity and ingenuity of our American inventors and their products that got me started in collecting and sharing antiques, vintage watches, and marvelous clocks. Navy BU Mark II Sextant w/ Wood Case Clean! We are not experts- we are describing this item purely cosmetically. The case measures 11 5/8″ x 11 1/8″ x 5 9/16. This sextant is in good cosmetic condition. There are a few small areas of oil residue on the sextant. There and a few light scratches and several very small light dots on some areas of the sextant. There is spotty surface wear and a couple of small areas of greening/rusting on the metal parts on the sextant and the metal parts inside of the case and on the case hinge. There are a few small paint chips on some of the pieces inside of the case. There are areas of scratching and small nicks on the inside of the case. The latches and handle on the outside of the case are intact. They show some scratching, areas of finish loss, and a couple of small spots of light surface greening and rusting.
