In 1899 it remained in disarmament, except for a commission of balizamiento in May in the Buenosairean coast. In view of the political situation with Chile, in 1900 four 76-mm rapid-fire guns were added to Zárate, to then carry out exercises in the Río de la Plata, including a combat shot. Assigned to the Naval School, in Jan / Feb 1901 he sailed with cadets along the Buenos Aires coast and then trained his own personnel in the Río de la Plata. In the following year he was assigned to the Defense Division of the Río de la Plata, intervening with her in the maneuvers of that year and in the second semester of 1902 he made a hydrographic campaign in the Plata. HERE IS WHERE THE PICTURES WERE TAKEN IN MONTEVIDEO PORT!! The Rescue of the “Antartic”. The Argentine Republic then tried to provide urgent assistance, the first step being for it, the provisions of O. N’1241 1903, which read. The Government having resolved to send a relief expedition to the crew of the Swedish Antartic explorer, which is supposed to be imprisoned by the ice around 65’South latitude and not having found in Europe a whaling steam appropriate to the object to acquire it, it has been decided to appoint a commission composed by the General Director of the Navy Commodore Atilio S. Barilari as President, and as members the General Director of the Material of the Ministry, Adolfo E. Ruggeroni, and naval engineers Gustavo Sundblad Rosetti and Jacinto Z. The Commission must also bear in mind that Uruguay’s arrangements must be completed by the end of September this year. Buenos Aires, June 9, 1903. Fdo: Manuel Barraza, JEMG. The aforementioned Commission found the Uruguayan corvette fit for the mission entrusted to it, so that it was discharged from the Lighthouses and Hydrography Commission of the Río de la Plata, it passed to the Arsenal de Marina of Dársena Norte for its repairs and modifications, which consisted mainly of reinforcing the bow and the stem, fill the double bottoms with sawdust of cork, add in prow a “hump of whale” and aft two, one per band, as well as tanks for an additional 6 tons of oil. Roca, with only 22 men, including his senior staff consisting of. Commander TN Julián Irízar. 2nd Cte TF Ricardo Hermelo. Second Lieutenant Jorge Yalour, Felipe Fliess and Enrique G. Machinist of 1’Juan Bertodano and 2′ Walter Carminatti. Surgeon of 2a Juan Gorrochategui. The TN Irízar and the AN Yalour, who went by land to the Cerro Nevado (Snow Hill) island, where the Chief of the Expedition, Ensign Sobral and part of the crew were found, stood out. When the march to Cabo Seymour was going to start where the Uruguay was anchored, Captain Larsen and the rest of the people came by land, with the news of the loss of the Antartic. Embarking the expeditionaries in Uruguay, he undertook the return, arriving on November 22, 1903 in Santa Cruz, from where he broadcast the news of the rescue to the world. Replenished, he continued his trip to Buenos Aires, where Uruguay entered between cheers on 02 Dio 1903. The staff and crew of Uruguay was received with tributes and a popular joy unknown until then in the Argentine capital. The triumph of the little corvette, was a triumph of the Argentine people in general and of its Navy in particular and meant the knowledge of our Nation in a world in which, up to that moment, it was an unknown distant and forgotten corner. After the euphoria of the triumphant arrival, it remained moored in South Dock until the loss of the Antarctic. Track Page Views With. Auctiva’s FREE Counter.
Is an original period item ca 1902 MOMENTS BEFORE RESCUE OF ANTARCTIC EXPEDITION…..
