VINTAGE MARUSAN JAPAN USS NAUTILUS SSN-571 TINPLATE TOY SUBMARINE 13 LONG. Topdog Presents: Always exciting stuff! Offered here is a vintage tinplate toy submarine modeled after the USS Nautilus (SSN-571), produced by Marusan Toys of Japan during the 1950s. This is a very appealing Cold War-era tin toy with a sleek streamlined form, finished with a dark black / gray upper hull, red lower section, and white conning tower marked 571. The design reflects the fascination of the 1950s atomic age and the fame of the USS Nautilus, the world’s first operational nuclear-powered submarine. The toy measures approximately 13 long and is made of metal / tinplate with nice original color and strong display appeal. It appears to have a propeller and diving plane details, along with a deck gun and periscope / mast features. I do not see an obvious way to open it, so it does not appear to be battery operated, though I cannot confirm exactly how it was originally powered. A terrific vintage Japanese toy for collectors of submarines, military toys, tin litho, and postwar Japanese toy production. This is a great example of that era.
