Antique 1861 USS Niagara Steam Frigate 3 HUGE LITHOS Mechanical Drawings PRINTS. RARE Set of Three Mid-19th Century Large Scale Engineering Lithographs!! Illustrating the Direct Acting Screw Propeller Engines employed on the USS Niagara Oversized Folio Format Each Lithograph Plate is 29 1/2″ x 23 1/2″ Published by George Weissenborn prior to or during 1861. The USS Niagara was launched in 1855. She was famous for her part in laying the first transatlantic telegraph cable in 1857-8. The three subject lithograph prints sourced from: “American Engineering”, a portfolio of what publisher Gustavus Weissenborn called “large and detailed engravings embracing various branches of mechanical art, ” including marine, locomotive and steam engines such as the ones offered here, as well as manufacturing machinery and structures such as iron buildings and bridges. The engravings were issued as folio prints, apparently to subscribers, and an accompanying text was published in 1861.
