Rare original panoramic crew photograph taken aboard the historic U. Navy cruiser USS Birmingham (CL-2). During World War I the cruiser escorted convoys across the Atlantic. Size approximately 43.5 x 12 cm. The photograph shows some lighter and darker areas visible on the deck. A small piece of the photograph is torn or missing and this can be seen in the pictures. Please look carefully at the photos and judge the condition for yourself. The frame has some chips and wear but appears to be original. History of The 1st Aero Squadron – Army. The 1st Aero Squadron was formed on January, 7th, 1914 and was the very first air unit created. Early on, the 1st Aero Squadron participated. In the hunt for Pancho Villa. When the US declared war on Germany in 1917, the squadron was sent to France with the 1st Division. In February 1918, a member of the 1st Aero Squadron became the first person in the US Military to shoot down an enemy aircraft.
