The USS Yorktown (CV-10) nicknamed The Fighting Lady was commissioned in April 1943 the second carrier of the Essex-Class of aircraft carriers, was originally named USS Bonhomme Richard but was renamed Yorktown in honor of the Yorktown (CV-5) that was lost at the Battle of Midway in 1942. The Yorktown (CV-10) received 12 Battle Stars and the Presidential Unit Citation during World War II and 5 Battle Stars for the Vietnam War. Rear Admiral Condit entered the military in May 1937 and was a pilot attached to the Torpedo Squadron Five (VT-5) on both the USS Yorktown (CV-5) and the USS Yorktown (CV-10) in World War II. Lieutenant Condit was captured when his plane was shot down in August 1943 and spent 2 years as a Prisoner of War in Tokyo. He was selected to represent the Navy POWs aboard the USS Missouri for the formal surrender ceremony. He stayed in the Navy after the war and served 22 years before retiring in June 1959, among his awards he received the Distinguished Flying Cross, the Bronze Medal, 2 Purple Hearts and POW Medal. She was later converted into an attack submarine and redesignated SSN-645. Construction and commissioning The contract for James K. Polk’s construction was awarded on 1 November 1962, and her keel was laid down on 23 November 1963 by the Electric Boat Division of the General Dynamics Corporation at Groton, Connecticut. She was launched on 22 May 1965, sponsored by Mrs. Wife of Admiral Horacio Rivero, Jr. The Vice Chief of Naval Operations, and commissioned on 16 April 1966 with Commander R. Douglass commanding the Gold Crew and Commander F. Commanding the Blue Crew. Polk sailed to Charleston, South Carolina in September 1966 to load Polaris ballistic missiles for her initial deterrent patrol. After completion of her shakedown, she operated on strategic deterrent patrols in the Atlantic Ocean and completed 19 of them between September 1966 and May 1971. In July 1971, James K. Polk began her first overhaul at Newport News Shipbuilding in Newport News, Virginia, for nuclear refueling and conversion of her ballistic missile system to support the Poseidon C-3 ballistic missile. She completed her conversion in late 1972 and commenced a rigorous schedule of sea trials and exercises, culminating in the Demonstration and Shakedown Operation (DASO) of her Poseidon missile system, which tested her ballistic missile system and crew by requiring the launch of a Poseidon C-3 missile from the submarine. Polk resumed deterrent patrols in the Atlantic Ocean in May 1973 with her new Poseidon missiles. She conducted her second overhaul at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard at Kittery, Maine, after completing her 50th deterrent patrol in September 1981. She completed overhaul in 1983 and conducted seven more successful deterrent patrols. She departed Portsmouth Naval Shipyard in November 1988, then headed south for her post-overhaul DASO. In May 1989 she began her final series of Poseidon strategic deterrent patrols. Polk celebrated her 25th year of commissioned service in April 1991. She finished her 66th and final strategic deterrent patrol in August 1991. Conversion to attack submarine In August 1992, James K. Polk began a nineteen-month shipyard conversion that removed her ballistic missiles and deactivated her missile tubes, converted her into an attack submarine, and installed Dry Deck Shelters on her deck which would allow her to support special warfare operations. Upon completion of this conversion in March 1994, her hull classification symbol was changed from SSBN-645 to SSN-645 to reflect her conversion from a fleet ballistic missile submarine to an attack submarine. After conversion, James K. Polk completed three extended deployments to the Mediterranean Sea, participating in numerous special forces and North Atlantic Treaty Organization exercises. Deactivation, decommissioning, and disposal. On 9 January 1999, James K. Polk was deactivated at Norfolk, Virginia. On 8 July 1999, she was decommissioned at the Puget Sound Naval Shipyard at Bremerton, Washington, and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register the same day. Polk’s sail is on display at the National Museum of Nuclear Science & History in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Construction and commissioning The contract to build Tecumseh was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of the General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut, on 20 July 1961. Tecumseh’s keel was laid down on 1 June 1962. She was launched on 22 June 1963 sponsored by Mrs. Sikes, and commissioned on 29 May 1964, with Commander Arnett B. Taylor in command of the Blue Crew and Commander Charles S. Carlisle in command of the Gold Crew. Tecumseh had conducted 21 strategic deterrent patrols in the Pacific by 1969, when she transferred to the United States Atlantic Fleet. She proceeded via Pearl Harbor and the Panama Canal to the United States East Coast and arrived at Newport News, Virginia, on 8 November 1969. Soon thereafter, she entered Newport News shipyard for a conversion which replaced her Polaris ballistic missile system with the new Poseidon ballistic missile system. Emerging from dry dock on 9 May 1970, Tecumseh underwent a thorough overhaul through that fall and winter before being assigned a new home port of Charleston, South Carolina, on 18 February 1971. Tecumseh conducted sea trials and shakedown out of Charleston before conducting two deterrent patrols in late 1971. Subsequently deployed to Holy Loch, Scotland, Tecumseh arrived in Scottish waters on 9 February 1972. She conducted 18 more deterrent patrols out of Holy Loch through 1976. Tecumseh was homeported in Charleston, South Carolina, at least from March 1982 until entering Newport News shipyard for a refueling overhaul in 1983. From 1987 to 1992 Tecumseh was homeported in Charleston SC, making patrols from both Charleston and Holy Loch Scotland. In 1992, Tecumseh off-loaded its missiles and participated in war games out of Charleston for training of attack boats and other Anti-Submarine warfare vessels or planes. January 1993, Tecumseh transited the Panama Canal, and subsequently ported in Bremerton, WA for decommissioning. Decommissioning and disposal Tecumseh was decommissioned and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on 23 July 1993. Memorials Tecumseh’s port torpedo tubes and a large piece of pressure hull were preserved and are now on display at the Naval Undersea Museum at Keyport, Washington.

Service history USS Casimir Pulaski (SSBN633)(Gold) won the Arleigh Burke Fleet Trophy for fiscal year 1985, for most improvement in combat efficiency of any Navy unit in the US Atlantic Fleet, under the Command of Commander Conrad A. History from 1964 to 1994 needed. On May 1, 1989 Casimir Pulaski participated in Exercise Lantcoop 1-89. Decommissioning and disposal USS Casimir Pulaski completed 88 Strategic Deterrent Patrols, the most of any of the Polaris/Poseidon/Trident converted original submarines, the “41 For Freedom” fleet. She well deserves the title of the Old Cold War Warrior. After her final cruise under Commander Kenneth W. Wrona, Casimir Pulaski was decommissioned on 7 March 1994 and simultaneously stricken from the Naval Vessel Register.

Construction and commissioning The contract to build James Monroe was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia on 3 February 1961 and her keel was laid down there on 31 July 1961. She was launched on 4 August 1962 sponsored by Mrs. Gilpatric, and commissioned on 7 December 1963, with Commander William H. Sandford in command of the Blue Crew and Commander Warren R. In command of the Gold Crew. Operational history Following shakedown off Florida’s Cape Kennedy, James Monroe spent the early months of 1964 in ballistic missile tests. She departed for her first deterrent patrol in June 1964. On 17 January 1967, James Monroe completed her twelfth deterrent patrol, having operated from both Holy Loch, Scotland, and Rota, Spain. Preparations for the arrival of the submarine squadron went forward with haste throughout the remainder of 1978 and into 1979. Commander Submarine Squadron 16 greeted the submarine tender USS Simon Lake, when she arrived at Kings Bay on 2 July 1979. Four days later, USS James Monroe entered Kings Bay and moored alongside Simon Lake’s starboard side to begin a routine refit in preparation for another nuclear weapons deterrence patrol. Decommissioning and disposal James Monroe was decommissioned on 25 September 1990 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register the same day. Recycling of Ex-James Monroe was completed on 10 January 1995.

Construction and commissioning The contract to build Von Steuben was awarded to Newport News Shipbuilding and Dry Dock Company in Newport News, Virginia, on 20 July 1961 and her keel was laid down there on 4 September 1962. She was launched on 18 October 1963, sponsored by Mrs. Fred Korth, and commissioned on 30 September 1964, with Commander John P. Wise in command of the Blue Crew and Commander Jeffrey C. Metzel in command of the Gold Crew. During the autumn of 1964, the Von Steuben completed two shakedown cruises – one for each crew – and a period of antisubmarine warfare training between the two cruises. On 22 December 1964, her Gold Crew fired her first Polaris ballistic missile on the Atlantic Missile Range before returning to Newport News for Christmas. In March 1965, Von Steuben headed for her first duty assignment. She joined Submarine Squadron 18 at Charleston, South Carolina, her new base of operations, and immediately began conducting strategic deterrent patrols. At the end of her 11th deterrent patrol early in 1968, Von Steuben was reassigned to Submarine Squadron 16 and operated out of Rota, Spain, until the middle of 1969. Larson (1959) and before that was named Alan Seeger (1954). The submarine suffered external damage to the sail and superstructure. After local repairs at the submarine squadron facilities in Rota, she reported to Groton, Connecticut, for more detailed repairs at the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation, after which she resumed deterrent patrols out of Rota. This incident was revisited, when USS Greeneville, on 9 February 2001, also conducted an emergency main ballast tank blow off the coast of Oahu while hosting several civilians. [3] Von Steuben had conducted an emergency main ballast tank blow due to its planes tangled in the submerged towline of the tug, jamming them so that the sub threatened to sink. Greenville blew her main ballast tanks merely to demonstrate a maneuver and not to escape from danger. Her captain consciously surrendered control of the vessel. The captain of Von Steuben had acted properly in ordering the emergency blow. However, Greenville’s captain had to face a court of inquiry and possibly a full court-martial, until his request to retire was approved. Upgraded ballistic missile system. In November 1970, Von Steuben visited Groton once again, this time near the end of a 16-month overhaul during which she was modified to carry the newly developed Poseidon C-3 ballistic missile, which boasted major advances in warhead technology and accuracy and systematically was replacing the older Polaris missiles in the Lafayette, James Madison and Benjamin Franklin-class submarines. Von Steuben conducted post-conversion shakedown during the early months of 1971 and, while escorted by the destroyer USS William C. Lawe (DD-763) for range security, conducted a two-missile Demonstration and Shakedown Operation (DASO) in which she fired her first and second Poseidon missiles in February and March 1971, respectively. She conducted an Extended Refit Period at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard between March 1978 and May 1978. Von Steuben’s ballistic missile system was upgraded a second time in the early 1980s to use Trident I (C4) ballistic missiles. [7] These missiles were also retrofitted to 11 other SSBNs of the James Madison and Benjamin Franklin classes, replacing their Poseidon missiles, and also were the first missiles carried by the early Ohio-class submarines. Trident missiles were three-stage missiles that provided for increased range along with advances in inertial guidance systems. [8] Von Steuben continued making strategic deterrent patrols into the early 1990s with the Trident I missile. Decommissioning and disposal Von Steuben was decommissioned on 26 February 1994 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register simultaneously.

Grant (SSBN-631), a James Madison-class fleet ballistic missile submarine, was the third shipa of the United States Navy to be named for Ulysses S. Construction and commissioning The contract to build Ulysses S. Grant was awarded to the Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics Corporation in Groton, Connecticut, on 20 July 1961 and her keel was laid down there on 18 August 1962. She was launched on 2 November 1963, sponsored by Mrs. Griffiths, the great-granddaughter of President Grant, and commissioned on 17 July 1964 with Captain J. In command of the Blue Crew. In September, Commander C. McDonald took command of the Gold Crew. Service history Following shakedown, the Ulysses S. Grant got underway from Groton in early December 1964, bound for the Pacific Ocean. Transiting the Panama Canal on 31 December 1964, she arrived at Pearl Harbor in January 1965. She was deployed to Guam, in the Mariana Islands, and conducted 18 deterrent patrols operating from there equipped with Polaris ballistic missiles before returning to the United States in 1969. McBride, took Ulysses S. Grant through a non-firing second-half DASO. During that period, the Gold Crew enjoyed a luxury for a “boomer”c crew, a swim call in the Caribbean. On 7 April 1987, two crewmen of Ulysses S. Grant were swept off the submarine’s deck during heavy seas 3 mile off Portsmouth, New Hampshire. One was rescued but was pronounced dead upon rescue. The other remains presumed “lost at sea”. In 1989, after the Blue Crew turned Ulysses S. Grant over to the Gold Crew while she was moored alongside the submarine tender USS Fulton, the Gold Crew took the submarine to Holy Loch, and Ulysses S. Grant operated on deterrent patrols out of Holy Loch for the remainder of her career. Decommissioning and disposal Ulysses S. Grant was decommissioned on 12 June 1992 and stricken from the Naval Vessel Register on the same day.
