1895-96 Royal Italian Navy Medal. This is a rare and historically important Italian Royal Navy medal, issued for service aboard the R. The medal features maritime and national symbols, including an anchor and the Royal Italian Eagle, representing both naval service and royal authority. This piece likely belonged to a sailor or cadet who served on the Cristoforo Colombo, a steel-hulled corvette of the Regia Marina, used at that time as part of the Training Squadron based in Venice. Design: Large anchor at center, a timeless symbol of naval strength and duty. Features the Royal Italian Eagle, emblem of the Kingdom of Italy and its military might. Bold and finely detailed relief work, consistent with late 19th-century Italian medal engraving. Loop missing (originally intended for ribbon or chain). They are all connected to numerous fabric sails with detailed stitching, all rigging are painstakingly fastened by hand in matching colors. Ordered by Chile during the South American dreadnought race as the Almirante Latorre-class battleship Almirante Cochrane, she was laid down before World War I. Her completion was delayed by labour troubles and the possibility that she might be repurchased by Chile for reconversion into a battleship, as well as the need for comparative trials to determine the optimum layout for aircraft carriers. Eagle spent the first nine months of World War II in the Indian Ocean searching for German commerce raiders. During the early part of the war, the Fleet Air Arm was desperately short of fighters and Eagle was equipped solely with Fairey Swordfish torpedo bombers until late 1940. Whenever Eagle was not at sea, her aircraft were disembarked and used ashore. The German submarine U-73 torpedoed and sank Eagle on 11 August 1942 as Eagle was escorting a convoy to Malta during Operation Pedestal.
