This is a U. Mississippi ashtray and let me tell you, this one is cool! Constructed of solid brass or bronze and weighing in at over a full pound, this outstanding rare piece of World War 2 military history. A number of buyers at this sale were representing other military museums from outside the region and were there to acquire new additions to their displays so there was some fierce competition but I walked away with this ashtray and a number of other really great items. In fact, another piece that I acquired from this museum went on to find a new home in a Fifth Avenue gallery in Manhattan a couple years ago. Meanwhile, I kept this ashtray as a part of my personal collection because it’s easy to display due to it’s size and yet it’s loaded with the history of that great dreadnought; nonetheless, I’ve finally decided to part with it and pass it along to somebody with an even greater appreciation for it than I. These military ashtrays were manufactured aboard Naval vessels by Navy machinists during their downtime when not repairing damaged ships or embroiled in battle. They were requested by and custom made for this countries greatest Commanders during some of the world’s most historic events and used aboard Americas most famous battleships. They were displayed proudly and used on a daily basis by military Commanders and at the end of a command, these coveted artifacts were either taken home by the Commander or were gifted to loyal staff members where they often remained for decades. These are not to be confused with general, run-of-the-mill ceramic ashtrays available in Naval base and online gift shops as are commonly found today. These custom machined ashtrays are extremely rare. While most of these historic battleships are long gone, like the Mississippi which was retired and eventually scrapped in 1956, a piece of them lives on through artifacts such as these. You don’t have to just read about her, you can actually hold a piece that was made just for her and for those who guided her as they risked their lives while defending this great country. The display easel is not included and any additional pictures or items seen in pictures are for reference only and not part of the sale. The item “U. S. S.
